A Review of UpCircle Face Moisturizer, Including a Discussion on Sustainability

Did you ever think about what happens to the used coffee grounds at your favorite coffee shop? Chances are, the shop pays to have the grounds sent to a landfill. But if you live in London, your coffee shop might be one of the 100 coffee shops that UpCircle collects grounds from each day. UpCircle turns these used coffee grounds into the star ingredients in their Coffee Face Scrubs.

Since launching with coffee scrubs in 2016, UpCircle has expanded into a complete skincare line, including the Face Moisturizer with Argan Powder and Face + Body Chai Soap Bars. Notice a trend? That’s right. UpCircle is part of a growing movement to repurpose (upcycle) waste from food production into beauty products. Their Face Moisturizer contains argan powder made from argan shells discarded during argan oil production.

UpCircle Sustainability

Best: UpCircle is more sustainable than most other beauty brands

Packaging

I have mixed feelings regarding UpCircle’s packaging. UpCircle provides a refill program for UK residents. They also offer refills for US customers via retail locations. Considering UpCircle’s dedication to upcycling food waste, I was surprised to learn they don’t use post-consumer recycled content in their packaging. Their glass bottles are recyclable but are made from virgin glass.

Nevertheless, UpCircle is plastic negative, meaning they remove more plastic from the ocean than they use. They only use plastic for pumps and droppers. If you already have a dropper or pump, you can purchase products with aluminum lids. Unfortunately, they do not use ocean plastic in their own packaging.

Ingredients

When it comes to ingredient sustainability, UpCircle surpasses most beauty brands. They built their brand on upcycling production waste. Most of their repurposed ingredients come from beverage waste. But they also repurpose byproducts from other industries, such as argan shell powder from argan oil production.

In addition, UpCircle does not use palm oil and uses many organically-grown ingredients.

Carbon Footprint

About 8% of global greenhouse emissions come from food waste. By upcycling organic production waste, UpCircle is helping to bring down the amount of greenhouse gases coming from food waste.

Ethics

UpCircle is vegan and certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. They also make donations to environmental and social causes.

Scoop of UpCircle Face Moisturizer

UpCircle Face Moisturizer Claims

UpCircle says the Face Moisturizerizer is “formulated with argan powder to strengthen and protect, aloe vera to leave skin and glycerin to lock in moisture.”

INCIDecoder calls glycerin a “superstar” ingredient. It attracts moisture and keeps your skin healthy. Aloe vera is also an excellent moisturizer with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Unfortunately, there is not much evidence to report the claim regarding argan shell powder.

UpCircle Face Moisturizer Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

UpCircle Face Moisturizer is my daytime moisturizer. With the argan shell powder, you might expect it to feel gritty, but it is very smooth. I have combination skin with dry and oily areas. UpCircle Face Moisturizer provides enough moisture for my dry spots but doesn’t overwhelm my oily areas.

Would I Buy Again?

Yes, I would repurchase UpCircle Face Moisturizer. I’m on my second jar.
